In recent news, we heard about the earthquakes/tsunami's that have happened in Japan and the question is how does the word get the millions of people in one day.  Although twitter is not exceptionally new, it is becoming new and more popular to the nation. Not only twitter but of course facebook, newspapers, magazines and other mass media's help portray about the recent disasters that have taken place in the world. With twitter, people who follow each other also follow major blog sites such as bossip, ymf or cnn and they also follow major celebrity's or networks and newspapers such as the Washington Post. Because people use twitter as their #1 source for information, they find out information quickly than they would on tv or in a newspaper. One unique tool that twitter has to offer is called a Trending Topic, #TT. A trending a topic is something that every twitter user is talking about as they tweet. When the Earthquake hit Japan, I noticed that the #1 Trending Topic was about Japan and the disaster that had happened (http://twitter.com/#search?q=japan). When you click on the Japan #TT to go see what people are talking about, there will be recent tweets that people have tweeted  about the incident & there is also that one tweet everyone wants to Retweet or Repost for their followers to see which will be at the top which usually have link where people can go to & see the story, from their phones or from the computers.
Also, with the high use of cell phones, people can also watch videos from their phones. I know I was able to see one of the videos of the effect from the the Earthquake from my i-phone (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/11/japan-earthquake-tsunami-2011_n_834499.html#s252343). Although it is not technology, they used pictures to show the areas affected by the earthquakes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598). Technology is becoming bigger and more people are using it to find out more information. Just because it comes on the news, doesn't mean you're not going to get all the information you want from it which is why sites like twitter & Google search engine are heavily used today to find out about such incidents
